Chapter 880: Xiao Chong Extra Story 6_3
Ever since Xiao Chong became her neighbor, her frequency of eating various snacks skyrocketed.
After breakfast, Xiao Chong put the cake box into a plastic bag in the car, took out a phone and wireless earbuds from his bag, opened the music app to listen to a song, and tilted his head to ask Lin Wanwan: "Want to listen together?"
"Oh." Lin Wanwan glanced at the phone in his hand, "Thank you."
"You’re welcome." Xiao Chong smiled gently, calmly stuffed the left earbud into Lin Wanwan’s beautifully contoured ear, while wearing the right earbud himself.
Even though his fingers didn’t touch Lin Wanwan’s ear, she still felt a tingle like electricity passing through, her scalp tingled, and her ears flushed quietly.
Someone like him, just by looking at you with those affectionate eyes, can make you feel there’s a connection here, not to mention the casual yet intimate action of sharing earbuds, it’s no wonder Lin Wanwan suddenly lost track.
To alleviate the awkwardness, Lin Wanwan asked: "You’re still carrying your phone?"
Xiao Chong glanced at Lin Wanwan’s gradually pink earlobe, a smile emerged in his eyes, saying: "Yes, it’s a field trip, you can bring it. Do you have a phone? I’ll save your number."
Lin Wanwan shook her head: "I don’t."
The school doesn’t allow students to bring phones, worried it might affect learning, since phones aren’t essential for school, they’re banned.
In the first week of school, there was a surprise check on students’ phones, and those who violated rules had their phones confiscated.
But in reality, many students still have phones; they can’t use them during class, but after school in dormitories or at home, they’re allowed. Completely banning is impossible.
Perhaps noticing their hushed conversations, their homeroom teacher Chen Guoyi, sitting next to them in the aisle, looked over at the two.
Their whispers immediately ceased, as if pressed by a pause button.
As the soothing Ancient Zither music played in her left ear, Lin Wanwan was utterly surprised.
She hadn’t expected Xiao Chong to listen to such classical music; she thought boys typically preferred rock, dance, or electronic music styles.
The melody of the Ancient Zither was so beautiful that Lin Wanwan stopped speaking, closed her eyes, immersed in the music, as if traveling through time, with a lingering resonance.
Upon arriving at the forest park, Chen Guoyi and a few class leaders guided everyone to a large open grassy area by the river, conducted a patriotic and educational talk, then announced they should act according to their study groups.
Lin Wanwan’s group of four boys and two girls had, after a month of interaction, formed a tacit understanding with Xiao Chong as their leader.
This boy who always carried a faint smile had an inexplicable commanding presence, a natural born leader.
The six of them strolled leisurely in the park, chatting, with sunlight filtering through the trees, casting speckled lights on them.
Qi Bingqiong pulled out a bottle of sunscreen spray from her backpack and sprayed it vigorously on her face and arms, prompting Lin Wanwan to step back, avoiding inhaling the spray.
"Why are you avoiding it? It’s not poison." Qi Bingqiong said discontentedly, then paused and added, "Want some too? I’ll help you spray, you’re so fair-skinned, you can’t handle the sun."
Lin Wanwan shook her head: "No thanks, I’m not afraid of the sun."
She didn’t want to use others’ sunscreen since she had nothing to reciprocate.
"Alright, suit yourself." Qi Bingqiong said, intending to put the spray back in her bag.
Mi Yunzhi jokingly called out: "Aren’t you giving any to us?"
Qi Bingqiong instantly changed direction, saying cheerfully: "Here!"
"Alright!" Several boys laughed and took the spray, joking around with it, except Xiao Chong who declined.
He stood on the side like an observer, watching his three "followers" play around.
Under the sunlight, the tall boy appeared even more outstanding.
As if sensing Lin Wanwan’s gaze, Xiao Chong turned his eyes towards her.
Their eyes met, Lin Wanwan quickly turned her face away, tucked her stray hair behind her ear, pretending to be indifferent.
Xiao Chong withdrew his gaze, a hint of a smile tugging at the corner of his lips.
Lunch was also settled within the forest park, each group brought picnic mats and their own lunch boxes.
Lin Wanwan only brought a box of homemade seaweed rice rolls with cucumber and ham bits, which seemed plain compared to others who prepared sushi, fruits, vegetable salad, sandwiches, lemon chicken feet, duck tongue, crispy ribs and all kinds of snacks, etc.
"You only brought a box of seaweed rice rolls?" Qi Bingqiong exclaimed naively, "No wonder you’re so thin, you really eat so little!"
"Yes." Lin Wanwan smiled lightly, her expression calm, not at all bothered by her modest fare.
Just like how she was frugal, but never felt inferior about poverty. Because when it came to necessary expenses, her grandparents had never deprived her. Not wanting, not stealing, not robbing, why feel inferior?
